BTW: Hispanic Heritage Month Edition
In this week’s edition of POCHO Stuff, I am thrilled to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which kicks off this weekend Sept 15, and officially goes for thirty days. I reached out to some of my favorite Latino influencers, leaders, and creators to share why this month holds significance for them. Here’s what they had to say:
🎉 A Fiesta with Meaning
Chris Cabezas, journalist and TikTok influencer, highlights the celebration aspect: “Hispanic Heritage Month to me is time in the year where we can really focus on celebrating all the contributions coming from the Hispanic community. We often forget, ignore, or simply don’t hear about the importance of Hispanics in the world in the present and past. It’s a perfect time to have a fiesta with a powerful and positive meaning. Everyone’s invited!” Follow Chris on IG.
✊🏽 Our Existence is Resistance
Jenny & Kevin, Latine YouTubers from Chicago living in Mexico, bring a sharp reminder of the social dynamics: “We live in a society that likes our food more than our presence, wants our cheap labor but blames us for ‘stealing’ jobs. Hispanic Heritage Month is a reminder to the USA that we matter, that our culture is beautiful and more than just an opportunity for profit and appropriation. In this society, existence is resistance, and we are HERE FOR IT ✊🏽🇲🇽🇺🇸🥳.” Subscribe to Eat Baila Travel on YouTube.
🌍 Unity in Diversity
My folklorico friend Diana Costanzo, a Latina leader and Bilingual Senior Human Resources Manager at Grand Hyatt, shares a message of unity: “HHM is important to me because it’s an opportunity to remind each other that our diversity is what makes us unique. It’s a time where we can celebrate our accomplishments and reinforce the commitment to continue to support one another.”
🌱 Key Takeaways
This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s embrace the vibrant diversity and rich contributions of the Hispanic community. From celebrating our history and culture to standing up against marginalization, this is a time for unity, pride, and resistance.
