Free Movies in San Diego

Asi como lo escuchas, there are free movies playing in San Diego this whole summer.  Whether you’re a parent, a couple or looking for a fun singles night out, ir al cine es mucho mejor cuando es gratis, a free movie in San Diego is indeed a great deal. ¿Hay gancho? No real hook, well except that the majority of the movies playing may be ones you missed at the theatre, sometimes even already on DVD and in a lot of cases new classics.  Movies playing all summer long and outdoors, al aire libre range from: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, pa’ los chamacos, to The Hangover, for us borrachos.  Here are some of my favorite summer places to watch free movies in San Diego, no matter who your entourage is made up of:

Family friendly flicks:

San Diego’s Summer Movies in the Park series is back this year with an improved line up. No matter where you are, esta serie cubre todo el condado and includes parks, pools and even a pier. National City gets them every second friday of the month through September. El pre-show entertainment comienza a las 7pm, y la movie begins at dusk. Look out for Happy Feet 2 at Las Palmas Pool and my childhood fave: Wizard of Oz at Kimball Bowl, check the Calendar of events to see donde in Nasty City van a ester. The same is true for North County, Central and Coastal communities…but not Chula Vista por mammones. Check out the full line up and make family plans that include San Diego Movies at the Park. This series typically begins at dusk and goodies are sometimes available as fund-raisers for community groups, so bring your cash, picnic blanket, and chairs. Si trais un chingo de kids, bring snacks and drinks to keep within the free budget.

Unemployed or work nights, deja a Judge Judy y saca a la familia al cine entre semana. El Summer Movie Express runs for nine weeks through the summer. Theatres will offer selected G or PG rated movies for only a dollar on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10:00. A portion of proceeds from the Summer Movie Express will be donated to the Will Rogers Institute. Como todo lo gatis, lleguen temprano, because seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to theater capacity. Aparte de los free films, theatres will have other exciting events pa’ los esquinkles, during the Film Festival.

The following San Diego area Regal and Edwards Cinemas will be hosting the Summer Movie Express:

21 & up fun:

Mmm…

En el Norte Del Condado, Stone Brewery (Everyone’s favorite local brewery), has free movies playing Wednesday nights for the 2012 series of Stone Late Night Movies. Tienen una pantalla enorme en el jardin! But because Mexicans are ultra friolentos, remember to bring extra layers: even though we’re in SoCal, nights can get pretty chilly in Escondido. Un sarape o tu blanket de tigres, should go great with your lawn chair. DO NOT BYOB, grab a beer at the bar then settle down on the grass for a night of great food, great beer, and great cinema. The Big Lewbowski kicks off the series and upcoming flicks include; Fight Club, Edward Scissorhands, 300 and more. Check out the full special movie night listing, which includes 3 o’clock family showings, all others start at 8:30pm.

HINT HINT: Get there early (American-time early) and carpool (Latino-style carpool).

Last but not least, is the Dive in theatre at The Pearl Hotel off of Rosecrans in Point Loma. This is one of my ultimate favorite summer things to do. Caile con tus amigos o en pareja. The giant screen features the best already-seen classics and new ones alike that play mostly as a backdrop to this charming hotel’s courtyard pool. The drinks are downtown-priced and dinner there is amazing as are the appetizers you should order if you don’t get a table. Las carabañas son lo maximo: if you have a party of 8 get a cabana and order bottle service. La gente se ve nice, dress to impress…although this is a somewhat pool party, no one actually goes in the pool, solo los piesitos. Get there early, parking IS a pain and seating IS limited. The Dive-in Theatre turns on its projector every wednesday through summer. Check out the full schedule, then make this an annual summer event, que esta de pelos.

I also get the hook up on many new movie releases and often invite my online friends. The easiest thing to do is subscribe or follow me to get all the details on my free movie screening in San Diego.
